The Monty Hall problem

OK, so after watching the enormously fat man win $675,000 on Deal or No Deal, it got me thinking about the original deal show… Let’s Make a Deal!

There’s a (now) classic mathematical problem that arises from one of the most popular situations in the game:

There are three doors.  Behind 2 of the doors is a goat (waaaap waap wap waaaaaah), behind 1 is a NEW CAR!  Monty asks you to choose one door, which you do.  And then, he shows you the goat behind one of your unchosen doors.  He then asks you, "Do you want to keep your door, or trade it for the other unchosen door?"

Well?  What do you do?

Hmmm… it should be a 50/50 shot, right?

Well, you’re wrong.  Read the story behind the math (you may have to think about it a few times), and then play the game yourself (and run a simulation) to see for yourself.

This one kinda blew me away at first too, and I’m pretty comfortable around numbers.

Crikey! What is all the fuss about?

In case you haven’t heard, Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin is dead.  Yes, folks, you heard it here first.

OK, maybe not first, maybe it’s… everywhere on the GD internet.  In fact, the news even clogged the tubes of the internet for a while!

It is a sad event, for sure.  Especially leaving behind a wife and two small children.  However, the man made a living fortune by risking his life.  He was very good at what he did.  This just happened to be a freak accident.  But guess what, too?  He died… filming a documentary… titled Ocean’s Deadliest!  O sweet irony!

Again, I’m not making light of the situation.  But the man, statistically, could have just as easily been hit by a bus.  Yawn.

1,000 Cars

What’s it like to see 1,000 virtual cars run the same course… at the same time?
The lemmings-esque flow is beautiful.

Don’t Download This Song

Weird Al has a new album, Straight Outta Lynwood, coming out soon.  The first single, "Don’t Download This Song" is out now, featuring great animation from the unique Bill Plympton.

Is the song cheesy?  Yes.  Is it topical as of 2-3 years ago?  Yes.  But it still manages to be entertaining with its "We are the World" feel, and contains an earworm of a chorus.

Watch and see

UPDATE: hear the song immediately on Al’s MySpace and listen to "You’re Pitiful", a great takeoff on the ubiquitous "You’re Beautiful".

Leaked Microsoft

Those of you not familiar with the original The Office may not enjoy this as much, but for the rest who are familiar with David Brent (aka Ricky Gervais), these leaked Microsoft (UK) in-house spots are very funny — albeit long (each episode is 20 minutes).

Here’s Part I:  Part II tomorrow
